10 Phrases for Shopping
①Kore-wa-ikura-desuka?
(How much is this?)
Sometimes, there are no price tags. So you should ask shop clerks the costs. This phrase is perfect for such situations!
②〇〇-wo-saga-shite-imasu?
(I’m looking for 〇〇)
Ex. (bag)-wo-saga-shite-imasu
You can say this when you can’t find what you want. It could be the place you want to go.
③〇〇-wa-doko-de-kae-masuka?
(Where Can I get 〇〇)
Ex. (T-shirts)-wa-doko-de-kae-masuka?
Some stores might not have what you’re looking for, so you can ask them.
④Kore-o-kudasai
(Can I get this?)
You don’t have to say this, but it is polite.
⑤Hokano-iro-wa-ari-masuka
(Do you have this in any other colors?)
Sometimes products aren’t displayed in different colors.
⑥Chi-i-sai-no-wa-ari-masuka (smaller)
/ Oh-ki-no-wa-ari-masuka (bigger)
(Do you have a smaller / bigger one?)
Some products in japan might be too small for you, you can say this in such a situation.
⑦Miteru-dake-desu
(I’m just looking)
Anyone may ask you when you’re checking out something, but if you don’t buy it, you can say this.
⑧Shi-chaku-deki-masuka?
(Can I try it on?)
Some shop clerks might ask you “shi-chaku-shi-masuka?” (=Do you want to try it on?) even though you don’t say this. If you are fine, you can say “dai-jyou-bu-desu”. It means “I’m fine”.
⑨Teni-tottemo-ii-desuka?
(Can I hold it?)
In most situations, it’s okay for you to touch goods. However, you should be careful holding products in fancy brand stores. You can say it in this situation.
⑩Doh-yatte-tsukai-masuka?
(How Can I use it?)
You may see some products for the first time in Japan, you ask people how to use any products.
