How to introduce yourself in Japanese

How much do you know about Japanese? Kon-nichiwa? Arigato? You would learn simple phrases for your introduction. Yon don’t have to understand any Japanese characters such as Kanji (Chinese character) , Hiragana and Katakana.




Let me tell you some basic phrases before for for introducing yourself.

Kon-ni-chi-wa   (Hello)

It is the most common greeting in Japan. It can be both formal and informal. You can say it at the beginning.

 

Hajime-mashite  (Nice to meet you)

You can say it after greeting to a person for the first time.  

 

Alright, Let’s get down to introduction parts!

 

 

Phrases for introduction

 

Watashi-no-namae-wa- (Your name) –desu. 

  [My name is ~]

ex.Watashi-no-namae-wa-Suzuki-desu. 

You can say it after giving a greeting to a person for the first time.

 

Watashi-wa- (Your country)-kara-kimashita.  

  [I came from ~]

ex. Watashi-wa-Nihon (means Japan)-kara-kimasita.

It is good to tell where you come from because Japanese people often don’t know what to talk with foreigners about.

 

Watashi-wa- (Your country or city) –ni-sunde-imasu.

  [I live in ~]

ex. Watashi-wa-Tokyo-ni-sunde-imasu.

You don’t have to say it. However, you can tell more infromation about where you live.

 

Watashi-wa- (Your occupation) -desu.    

  [ I’m ~(about your job)]

ex. Watashi-wa-engineer-desu. Watashi-wa-gakusei (student)-desu.

 You can say your job in English if you do not know the word in Japanese.
A lot of English words are used in Japan. However, You do not put any article (a,an) before noun when you speak Japanese.

 

Watasi-wa- (Whatever you like) -ga-suki-desu  

  [I like ~]

ex. Watashi-wa-Sushi-ga-suki-desu. Watashi-wa-Anime-ga-suki-desu.
