Have you ever heard of Ninja(忍者)? Where did you hear it? Manga or Anime, 「NARUTO」,「Ninja Hattori-kun」? So, do you know real Ninja? What did they do?
What were Ninja?
Ninja was a person who did “Ninjyutsu”. This is a term for techniques such as intrusion, theft, assassination, self-defense, disguise…etc, to conduct spy activities during the Warring States Period.
Most ninja served monarchs and contributed to stealing information from enemies for them. For your information, A female ninja was called Kuno-ichi.
Ninjyutsu and Equipment
①Kagi-nawa
It was used when ascending a wall or a valley with a rope with an iron hook.
It also became a weapon as it was for capturing enemies
②Shuri-ken
It was used mainly to throw it at the enemy and frighten them, to make time for a getaway. Although it did not have killing power, it was sometimes used to assassinate with a poisoned tip.
③Makibishi
It is the dried seed pod of the water plant. This shape is a triangular pyramid, and wherever it was placed, the sharp point turned upwards, causing damage the pursuers foot, which could buy time.
④Shinobi-Gatana
It is a kind of sword. However, it was mainly used as a stepping stone for getting over a fence,sometimes for killing enemies
Could you be a Ninja?
Koka city (Mie Prefecture) is said to be one of the birthplaces of ninja. There is Ninja village which is called “Koka-No-Sato”. There are various facilities such as “Shuriken Dojo” and “Karakuri House” on the vast site. In “Ninja Dojo”, you can experience the training for becoming Ninja : for example, climbing a castle wall, getting over a fence, tightrope walking … etc. You get the certificate after this training.
