Have you ever heard of Geisha? Do you know about them? Cound you see still them in Japan? I am going to introduce them to you.




What is a Geisha?

In general, Geisha is a woman who entertains customers by singing and dancing at a banquet. They are trained in various traditional Japanese arts, so they can do Japanese dance and play the shamisen which is a traditional Japanese instrument. Geisha was born about 1000 years ago. They were the most prosperous in the Edo period about 300 years ago. At that time, there were also men Geisha.

 

What is Maiko-san?

You can see Maiko-san which is an apprentice Geisha in Kyoto. They can become a Geisha (Geiko) after they are trained for some years. Most of the Maikos are under 20 years old. The Maikos wear their hair tied up but when they become a Geisha they wear a wig.

 

Where can you see them?

As I said, you can see them in Kyoto. However, there are a few spots where you can find them. One of these spots is Gion-Kõbu (祇園甲部). You are likely to see them there at night.

 

 

Do you want to see a Geisha show?

 

You can see a show of Japanese traditional arts by Geisha. They are held twice a day, at the Yasaka Kaikan at 6 PM and 7 PM. The program is about 50 minutes long.
