It is located in the south of Kagoshima Prefecture Osumi Peninsula, about 500 square kilometers in area. It is known for it’s large cedar trees, including “Jomon cedar” with an estimated tree age of over 2,000 years. Miyanoura Dake of the highest peak in Kyushu (1936 m), etc. About 20% of the island area was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993. Besides this, It is also said that this is the stage of the ghibli movie “Princess Mononoke”

It is a popular spot where stump hole looks heart shaped. It was discovered by Dr. Ernest Henry Wilson, a botanist from the American Harvard University who visited Japan. It is called the Wilson stock.
