CALPIS is one of the most popular soft drinks in Japan. Even though about 100 years have passed since its release, many people still like it. As it isn’t common to see CALPIS outside of Japan many people haven’t heard of it. I will now introduce it to you
What is CALPIS?
This drink, which is derived from a traditional Mongolian beverage, was discovered by a travelling Japanese man. The main ingredient in CALPIS is milk. To make the drink, you must first remove the fat from the milk, then add CALPIS bacteria. CALPIS bacteria is a mix of lactic acid bacteria and yeast.
The method for making CALPIS is a closely guarded secret and only a few people working for CALPIS know how to make this fungus. First you must add the milk to the existing bacteria. It is important to always keep some of the original product in order to be able to keep producing CALPIS. After that, the liquid is fermented and sugar is added. Then the product is complete. There is a good balance between sweet and sour.
In Japan, there are many fermented foods such as, Natto and miso belong to fermented foods.
Why was it named CALPIS?
The origins of the name CALPIS comes from the “Cal” in “calcium”, and the “PIS” in “Sarpis” which means dairy products in Sanskrit.
CALPIS is also sold in the US, but it has a different name there. CALPIS also sounds like cow’s piss in English and some people complained that it was a disgusting name, so it was changed to CALPICO in foreign countries.
